Friday the 13th occurs when the thirteenth day of a month falls on Friday, which superstition holds to be a day of good or bad luck. In the Gregorian calendar, this day occurs at least once, but at most three times a year. Any month's 13th day will fall on a Friday if the month starts on a Sunday. In 2009 this applies to the months of February, March, and November.

The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia,[1][2] a word derived from the concatenation of the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή) (meaning Friday), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς) (meaning thirteen), attached to phobía (φοβία) (meaning fear).

Superstitions do you have any to confess?

I had one grandmother who would not travel on Friday the 13th.

My other grandmother would go into a panic attack if an umbrella was opened in the house.

My mom had a thing for broken mirrors, and could not stand, would not touch, would go out of her way not to come into contact with a black cat.

Mom and my grandmothers knew all the old wives tales and lived by them. They know what would happened if someone swept under your feet before Sundown. They knew which direction to sweep off the porch. There were so many!

Of course all of these women grew up in the Northeast Tennessee town where I was born. I am sure a lot of it is mountain folklore.

I don't think I have any superstitions that rule my life. Or do I? hmmmm.

What about you? Are there any secrets lurking. Anything you have grown up believing that just might be a superstition?
