Ivy, I haven't seen you since the days your dad and I worked
together. The days he brought you to the company picnics and you and my
daughter played. I am very sorry to hear what happened to you. Take it
one step at a time. I hope in time the wounds will heal and you once
again return to school and all the things you love to do.

Ivy,
Life is awesome and always full of lessons to learn. I had the
opportunity to meet your parents through a business transaction. You're
truly blessed to have such wonderful caring parents as you have! My
heart was truly touched to hear about you and see the love that your
Mom and Dad have for you. I have a daughter that is 17 who commutes
from Murrieta to Escondido, M-F for school, so your story was very
close to my heart. I wish you the absolute best in all of your
endeavors. God bless you and grant you the strength and courage for the
ability to achieve your life goals.
Sincerely,
Steve Self

Dear Ivy,
You probably have read many messages wishing you a complete recovery.
Well, this is another one. I have read almost all the Chapters of the
book that your father has written. Your story as well as the suffering
of your family is very moving. At some point at was on tears but this
is not about me. I, of course wish you full recovery. You will regain
your health and soon all this traumatic experience will be a thing of
the past. I also want to say thanks to Sam for helping you. I read his
message, his words shown his great courage and at the same time he is
humble. You are very lucky that he helped you, WE all are very lucky
that people like Sam are among us. You, Sam, and your family are
exceptional people.
God Bless you all

In a flash, a horrible error in decision has forever changed the lives
of so many- but as that Ivy’s condition improves, so many more lives
are touched.
Sometimes I imagine there must be prayers with the question of
“WHY?†and although I don’t claim insight to Divine Providence, I
know that I try to keep Ivy and her family in mind any time I feel
anger behind the wheel. God only knows how many lives have been saved
via the amazing strength this family has. Thank you for your continued
efforts to educate the rest of the world in how to be better people.
Although this is the first I’ve posted, I’ve followed the events
throughout the course of time. I feel compelled to offer my gratitude
in addition to explain just how much esteem, respect, and admiration I
have for this courageous family and a very special woman, Ivy.

I doubt you remember me but you were standing right behind me at the
afi show at universal ampthitheatre just a month before your horrible
accident and you asked me to put your purse on the other side of the
barricade so you could mosh your heart out. I talked to you at the
irvine show the same weekend and a couple times on the internet too.
For months after I heard about your accident I tried to get as much
info as I possibly could about your condition and I was about to go
visit you in early January but your Dad sent out a letter saying that
you couldn't have any visitors because you were in intensive care. Over
the next few months, I lost touch with alot of my DF friends and
consequently I lost access to updates on your condition. Since then, I
have thought about you periodically and with the hype of
Decemberunderground, I have thought about you alot more and I was just
listening to loveline tonight and as soon as I heard your voice I lit
up and my heart started to flutter. For all I knew you were dead and
hearing you on the radio made me feel so relieved and I just want you
to know that even though I barely know you, I am proud of you for
getting through all of this and I find your story inspirational and
maybe the world will look at it and see just how incredible AFI really
are. Congratulations on getting out of the hospital and please don't
let this curb your amazing spirit. I'm glad you enjoyed weenie roast
and hopefully I will see you at many AFI shows in the coming months.
Stay cool,
Aron

Dear Ivy,
So much time has passed since I saw you last. For that, I am truly
sorry. I know there are so many stories of your recovery that I have
missed. Stories that I am sure would have inspired me for years to
come. I will never forget the day I found you on that stretch of
highway. I drive by that point every day and say a prayer for you and
your wonderful family. But no prayers I have ever said in my life
matches the ones I said for you on that day. I wanted nothing more than
this young girl to make it home to her family. As I held you and waited
for the ambulance to arrive, I asked God to let me one day speak to
you... to let you return to your life recovered from this days events.
You were far to young to leave us. There were too many things you had
not experienced, and too much your family had not experienced with you.
We never realize how precious and short life is until these moments.
After we carried you out of the canyon, I stood numb on the roadside
and prayed again that you would make it to the hospital. Then went to
my own daughter that a stranger so kindly watched as I was with you. I
kissed nd held her as I never had before. Thanking God for His kindness
for keeping her safe and healthy for the brief time she had been with
us. I felt very lucky and very guilty at the same time. My Daughter sat
smiling at me while someone elses daughter was now fighting for her
life. I needed to do more. I left my daughter again to see if there was
something else that I could do for you. I prayed again for God to help
me help you. I searched the area near your car and found your cell
phone, scrolled down and saw the dame "Dad". For a moment I panicked
and thought that it wasn't my place to call your father to tell him
such horrible news. But I had just prayed for a way to help you, and
now here it was. Maybe I was the right person to make that call. If you
were my daughter I would have wanted to here from someone immediately.
Your father was stunned but thankful he was notified. He said he was
very far away, but he would call your mother who was much closer to go
to the hospital, he would be there as soon as he could. I dropped off
my daughter at my mothers house and felt that couldn't leave you and
your family, so I went to the hospital and waited for your mother to
arrive in hopes that I may be able to help her.
I don't know that I was any help at all... I was just there.
Over the coming months I visited you and your family. What an amazing
family you have. Everything seemed to come into total clarity for me as
I watched the events of your life unfold. I have taken with me a few
important lessons from you, things I think about all the time. Nothing
is more precious than life, and nothing is more powerful than the will
to live, and nothing in life is more important to a parent than their
child.
As I watched your mother and father watch over you for months, never
tiring of their task, learning more about the human body and recovery
from injuries than they ever thought they would know, I was truly
touched by their conviction. You would recover, and they would take you
home. Your mother gave me a gift that I cherish to this day. Not only
the gift of how I should be as a parent, and what I should give to my
children, but the gift of a blanket she had knitted as she sat by your
side. One that she knitted as she remembered all of your childhood, all
of the wonderful memories that having you as a daughter had given her.
She told me that your life had been woven into the fabric of that
blanket.
I will leave in a few moments to take my daughter to daycare, and start
my working day, delayed a little by this email, I will wrap my sleeping
litlle angel in that blanket, strap her in her carseat, and drive the
same route to my mothers daycare that I have for nearly four years, and
as I pass the spot that I met you, I will, as always, say a prayer for
you, a prayer for my children, and thank God for all of the prayers He
answered for The life of Ivy.
Your life, and your struggle to keep it has been an inspiration to so
many. Judging by this web site, you have had many people to help you
through this time in your life. This too is an inspiration to me, and
my faith in mankind. You gave me something in my life when it was so
greatly needed... Faith. Thank you.

Hello everyone. Thank you all dearly for your kind words. It was really
neat to come here and see all the comments from people I knew before
that horrible day in December of 2003 as well as those from people I
met while in the hospital. Sometimes it is so hard to believe that the
time before my accident and the time after it are from one life...my
life. But it is. Surreal, isn't it?
Anyway...I have been slowly improving. I am finding more and more
things I can do on my own. I know it sounds silly to be excited that
you can stand up from the car on your own, but hey, for me it is a big
accomplishment. I also got some wonderful news from my kidney doctor.
He said that there is a good chance I will be able to come off
dialysis. Whereas my kidneys were only functioning at 14% when I first
came home, they are now functionig at 26%. The coolest thing about that
is that it means my lungst MUST be doing better and my lungs are my
biggest problem. Hopefully they will improve to the point where I can
breathe without an oxygen mask on my face. Unfortunately, I have been a
bit sick lately and have been throwing up, which is not good for me at
all. Today has been better, though, as far as that goes. My iron is
really low again so I am always tired and I have to go to the dialysis
center to get IV iron.
I have been doing as lot of beading lately and have actually made some
really nice pieces. My mom and I have both really gotten into it and
have a pretty nice supply of beands. We have thought of selling my work
to help pay for my medical expences. I though that was a pretty good
idea. Evidentally, so did a few of the people who sold beands to my mom
on EBay. They said that we should auction my work and put up an "About
Me" page explaining why i am selling my stuff and have a link to this
site. They said they think it will help bring in more buyers. I also
have been writing a lot of letters. Unfortunately, we have had some
recent family tragedies, so I have been writing to the appropriate
family members. If anyone is interested in writing me letters, my dad
has his work address posted so you can writ to me through him. I love
to recieve mail!
